Proctoring & Monitoring

Three layers of assessment integrity — watch attempts live as they happen, detect suspicious behavior with weighted signals, and lock the exam down to Safe Exam Browser.

Overview

The assessment ribbon has a dedicated Proctoring category with separate controls for Live monitoring, Anomaly detection, Anomaly sensitivity, Anomaly signals, Safe Exam Browser, and SEB tools. Their current values are visible on the ribbon. Live monitoring can accompany either browser-based anomaly detection or a required Safe Exam Browser environment.

A Professional feature

Live monitoring, anomaly detection, and Safe Exam Browser lockdown are all part of the Professional plan.

Live monitoring

Turn Live monitoring on or off from its ribbon dropdown. When enabled, the Live page in the workspace lists every assessment with participants currently working, and a drill-in view shows each participant's progress in real time.

Participants' answers auto-save every few seconds while they work, so what you see is their actual current state — including their identity when the assessment collects it, and drag-and-drop questions arranged exactly as the participant sees them.

Sessions that go quiet are marked stale after a few minutes, so you can tell an abandoned attempt from an active one.

Anomaly detection

Choose Off, Silent, or Take action directly from the Anomaly detection dropdown. Detection watches for suspicious behavior during an attempt. Every signal has a weight; when the cumulative weight crosses the sensitivity threshold, the configured action fires.

Modes

Mode	Behavior
Off	No detection.
Silent	Events are recorded and shown to reviewers, but the participant is never interrupted.
Take action	When the threshold is crossed, the attempt is auto-submitted and marked terminated.

Sensitivity

Choose Lenient, Moderate, or Strict from the separate Anomaly sensitivity dropdown. These control how much cumulative signal weight is tolerated before the threshold trips. Turn on anomaly detection to change the sensitivity.

Signals

The Anomaly signals dropdown lets you select the seven signals captured in the participant's browser, with at least one selected while detection is on. The ribbon shows how many are selected. Multiple sessions is detected server-side whenever detection is enabled and is not a selectable browser signal.

Reviewing events

Flagged submissions carry an anomaly badge in the submissions list, and each one has a full event timeline — what happened, when, and with what weight.

Participant transparency

Participants are never monitored covertly: when detection or monitoring is on, the assessment's start screen discloses it — including whether violations end the attempt automatically.

Safe Exam Browser

For the strictest setting, require Safe Exam Browser — the assessment can then only be loaded and submitted from within SEB, a dedicated lockdown browser that prevents switching apps, copying, or opening other sites.

Choose Optional or Required from the Safe Exam Browser dropdown, then save the assessment. Required disables the anomaly controls while retaining your selections for when SEB becomes optional again. Open SEB tools to download the .seb configuration and copy the proctor's quit password. If prompted, save with SEB required and choose Reload tools; downloads become available once the tools load. Participants opening the link in a normal browser see instructions to launch it in SEB.
